After attending the public schools he became a student in Mount Union College. He subsequently entered Rush Medical College, at Chicago, Illinois, and received his M.D. from that institution in the class of 1867. He immediately began the practice of his profession in New Scottsville, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, where he remained for a period of seven years. At the expiration of that time he moved to Allegheny City (Pittsburgh North Side), and there engaged in general practice.
