General Notes: Husband - James Smith
He came with his parents to Buffalo, New York, when a lad of eleven years, and entered the employ of the New York Central Railroad Company, first, as a bell boy, later he entered the company's shops, at Buffalo, becoming an expert machinist, steadily advancing until he was head machinist in the company's shops in Buffalo. He came to the Venango County, Pennsylvania, oil fields, in February, 1865, and worked for the firm of Hamlin, Moore & Company, at Plumer, until the spring of 1866, when he began business on his own account. He continued in business, at Plumer, until April, 1871, then moved to Franklin, Pennsylvania, where he bought, from the Windsor Brothers, the Boston Iron Works, located on Otter street above Fourteenth. Here he did a large and profitable business in machinery and everything needed in the line of oil well supplies. Under his capable management, the iron works formed one of Franklin's leading industries. About five years prior to his death, Mr. Smith sold out his business on account of failing health and lived retired. He was a devoted member of the Presbyterian church, of Franklin, and gave generously to its support. He was a member of the Masonic order, belonged to Hiram Lodge of Buffalo, was a charter member of Michael Angelo Council, Royal Arcanum, of Franklin. Politically he was a Republican and served in the city council and on the school board.
