He was reared on a farm until he was six years of age, when he was taken by his parents to the county seat. He was educated in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, public schools and academy, and took a full course in Duff's Commercial and Business college in Pittsburgh. Having specially fitted himself by his commercial course for a business life, he became a member of the firm of C. H. Fogg & Co. They were engaged in the lumber business and operated a planing mill and lumber yards at Greensburg. They were extensive and successful dealers in rough and dressed lumber, and furnished all kinds of planing-mill work. In politics Mr. Detar held to the democratic faith of his forefathers.
