General Notes: Husband - George B. Daugherty

He was reared at Kittanning, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, where he received his education in the public schools. Leaving school he assisted his father in the brick business until the death of the latter in 1855. In 1860 Mr. Daugherty established the Avenue brick-works and engaged in the manufacture of brick there. The Avenue brick-works covered quite an area and were equipped with first-class machinery. Mr. Daugherty employs a constant force of twenty men and manufactured red-pressed and fire-brick, lime, cement, tile and chimney tops. In addition to brick manufacturing he was largely engaged in contracting and building. He built the brick work of the Armstrong and Clarion county jails, the Indiana County court-house and built most of the large brick buildings of Kittaning which were erected in that era. Besides his property at Kittanning, he owned a farm of one hundred and twenty-nine acres of well improved land in Valley township.
In politics Mr. Daugherty was a republican and besides serving several terms as a member of the town council, was overseer of the poor at Kittanning for more than thirty years. He was a member of Lodge No. 244, Free and Accepted Masons. He was instrumental in building the first county home for the poor in Armstrong County.

He was a successful brick manufacturer and contractor. He manufactured all the brick and built all the brick work in the county jail, as well as the opera house, later occupied by the Safety Deposit & Guarantee Company, the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Works at Ford City, the Clarion jail, the Indiana courthouse, Kittanning courthouse and many other buildings in Kittanning and surrounding places. For years he was the only brick manufacturer of any consequence in that region of Pennsylvania. He was the originator of the poor farm, took great interest in bettering the condition of the poor, and for many years was trustee of the county farm.
