He and his wife, with their first four children, emigrated from Omagh, in County Tyrone, Ireland, May 23, 1790, arriving in America August 24, same year. They settled near Taylorstown, in Buffalo township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, on the place later owned by Jacob White, which was known as one of the best oil farms in the Taylorstown oil field.

He was a member and for years an elder of the Presbyterian Church at Upper Buffalo; in politics he was an old-line Whig.
