He attended the public schools of Ohio township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, and for a time was his father's assistant on the farm and in the oil business. After the death of his father in 1901 he conducted operation on the home farm, where he specialized in dairying, also doing general farming. He was a Progressive in all political action, and belonged to the Presbyterian Church, in which he was an elder.
