He graduated at Jefferson College, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and entered the ministry of the Presbyterian Church in 1835. He was a firm adherent to the doctrines of his church, a lifelong foe of the system of human slavery, a thorough reformer, and an advocate of the cause of the oppressed.
With his first wife he had eight children, four sons and four daughters.
