He was born in Butler County, PA. [HVC 1890, 1054]
In 1829 they came to Venango County, PA, and purchased two hundred acres of land in Plum township at a cost of three dollars per acre, a large portion of which was well timbered with fine oak. They became among the wealthiest farmers of the township, and were prominent members of the Presbyterian church at Sunville.
All together, he was the father of fourteen children.
