General Notes: Husband - Dr. James Dowling

The first physician who located in Jamestown, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, was Dr. James Dowling. He arrived in the spring of 1832, and lived in a part of Williamson's house. The following year he bought the Williamson property, and soon thereafter built a residence of his own. He was a genial man and a successful physician. He continued in the village until 1836, when he sold to Dr. William Gibson and removed to Brookville, Jefferson County, where he died some time in the seventies.

He was born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and read medicine under the tuition of Dr. Crosett, of Kinsman, Ohio. He removed to Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, in 1841, and located at New Prospect, afterwards known as Dowlingville, or Baxter. In 1843 he removed to Brookville, and was elected to the Legislature in 1844, and was granted a diploma from the Pennsylvania Medical College March 4, 1845.
For many years his practice was very extensive, and probably no physician who ever located in Jefferson County enjoyed so great a reputation as he. His manner was social and agreeable; careful in his dress and personal appearance; attentive to his patients, and kind to the poor. In the autumn of 1860 he started on a tour through the counties of Elk, Clearfield, and several places in the eastern part of the state, and had arrived at Luthersburg, Clearfield County, on his return, when he was taken seriously sick. A messenger was dispatched to Brookville for his brother, Dr. Hugh Dowling, but before his arrival Dr. Dowling had passed away. [HJC 1888, 371]

By his second marriage there were born four sons and two daughters, all of whom were dead before 1888 except one.
