General Notes: Husband - Andrew Mitchel

He was born in Dublin, Ireland; emigrated to America in 1774; served as a Lieutenant in the Revolution; settled in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

He was a native of Dublin, Ireland, emigrated to America in 1774, on the eve of the Revolution. Espousing the cause of the colonies, he took position as an officer among the defenders of his adopted country. He was a gentleman of finished education and excellent moral training,-having been destined for a clerical life,-adopted teaching as an avocation, and in the dearth of preceptors after the peace of 1783, had gratifying success as an educator. He came to Harrisburg in 1791, and in June, 1795, married Margaret, the widow of Capt. John Hamilton. He was one of the burgesses of the borough in 1799, and served a number of years in the Town Council. Mr. Mitchel was an officer and early member of the Presbyterian Church, and greatly assisted in its first organization.

General Notes: Wife - Margaret Alexander

On the death of her first husband, she found herself a handsome and wealthy widow, thirty-five years of age, with six minor children. After a widowhood of two or three years, she too, by a singular coincidence, married a Mr. Mitchel, but not a kinsman of the man whom her mother-in-law had married thirty years before.

Summer and winter she took a cup of tea at daylight. Unusually early, tidy and active in her habits, of good stature, sound health, even temper and "beautiful complexion."
