General Notes: Husband - Joseph Thomas Trees
He was educated at the Roxbury school, the ground for which was given by his father, with the understanding that it was to be used for school purposes. Joseph left home when he was about eighteen years of age, following the occupation of millwright. In 1875 he went to W. Dewees' wood mill, at McKeesport, Pennsylvania, as superintendent of construction. He had at this time, with his brother John, built mills in almost every state east of the Mississippi. Joseph Trees was sent for from all parts of the United States for expert work, his judgment in all matters pertaining to millwrighting being considered final. At the W. Dewees wood plant he built what was known as Number One, the largest hammer in the world. The foundation was so true that it never needed to be lined up in twenty-six years. Mr. Trees was the inventor of the paint grinder and moving crane, both of which were later used by the United States Steel Corporation.
In 1902 Mr. Trees retired from public life and moved to "Roxbury," the old homestead of the Trees family, he having bought it some years before.
