He received a common school education and was brought up on a farm. He was Justice of the Peace, School Director, Supervisor, Assessor and Auditor of Mead Township. He was Commissioned Captain of a militia company by Gov. David R. Porter, of Pennsylvania, August 3, 1842, and held the same until the law governing militia organizations was nullified. He began life for himself at the age of twenty-one, when he obtained a deed for his farm, which he cleared, making it one of the best farms in the township. He paid out $12,550 for land during his life and he possessed a large amount of property, the result of the efforts of himself and his wife. He built and operated a saw-mill on his farm, and had an interest in the Warner Cheese Factory. He was always active in the interests of his township, and, with William Warner, was a solicitor for aid to construct the New York, Pennsylvania & Ohio Railroad, from their own township and others. In politics he was a Democrat. He and his wife were members of the United Presbyterian Church.
