He was born in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, where he was educated in the common schools. At the age of seventeen he began to work in the mill at Apollo, remaining there about six years, after which he went, in 1897, to Scottdale and took a position as a roller with the Scottdale Iron & Steel Company. About 1900 he was advanced to the office of superintendent. He was a member of Lodge No. 562, F. and A. M., the Elks, Lodge No. 777, and the Grand Fraternity, all of Scottdale. In politics he was an active Republican, and was chairman of his ward committee.
