---

He was born on the homestead near Doylesburg, Pennsylvania, and in 1846 came to Concord, Franklin County, and learned the blacksmith's trade with William Donnelly (who later became his father-in-law); in 1852 he set up in business for himself.
He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and was recording steward for over twenty years. Politically he was a Prohibitionist, when not a Democrat.
