He tended to be frail all his life. He developed curvature of the spine at an early age and had palpitations of the heart for many years - possibly had Barlow's Syndrome, which could also have caused the heart problems of William A. Donaldson. Ernest spent his adult years living with his brothers and sisters - his three brothers were all farmers at that time, and he was of considerable help to them. He was a gentle man with a tremendous sense of subtle humor. He was a faithful attender at church for all his life. When Elma died in 1938, she willed Ernest her home in Nickleville. Florence and George Nieman moved in with him and took good care of him until his death.
