His elementary education was acquired in the public schools of his native township, and this was supplemented by a course at Peirsol's Academy, after which he was engaged in teaching for a period of four years. He then studied at Beaver College and at Geneva College, at Beaver Falls, and finally matriculated at the University of Pittsburgh, from the medical department of which institution he was graduated in the class of 1910, the degree of Doctor of Medicine being conferred upon him. In the fall of the same year he established himself in the practice of his profession at Holt, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, removing at the end of one year to New Galilee, Beaver County. He was a member of the Beaver County Medical Society. His political support was given to the Republican party, and his religious connection was with the Presbyterian Church.
