His mother died when he was eight months old and his baby wants became the greatest concern of the maiden ladies, Maria and Susan Cole, who lived at what was the Cunningham farm, part of the original McElroy tract. He was tenderly and lovingly cared for by the sisters until he was no longer in need of their assistance. He grew to manhood at the farm and there resided until many years after his marriage. He then moved successively to Ligonier, Turtle Creek and Pitcairn, ending his days.
