His education was acquired in the public schools of Vernon township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, and Smith's Commercial College of Meadville, and he then commenced an exhaustive study of the methods of gardening and fruit culture. For many years after his marriage he cultivated the farm of his grandfather, and in April, 1901, removed to another farm, purchasing it in 1903. It consisted of twelve acres, and he set out two hundred trees, and made a specialty of gardening and fruit growing. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Meadville.
