He inherited the greater part of his father's homestead, which he sold in 1854, and moved to Marshall County, IL.

He was a member of the Meth­odist Episcopal Church, and was one of the origi­nal members of the M. E. Society at Tilery's, or­ganized in 1840. He was one of its first board of trustees, and was a zealous and liberal member of the church.
