General Notes: Husband - James Dinsmore

He was born in Canton township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and removed to Mt. Pleasant township, where he followed farming very successfully. He was prominent and influential both in the Presbyterian Church and Sunday-school (being a member and regular attendant of both), and served for many years as superintendent of the latter. He and his wife brought up their children in strict conformity to the tenets of the church.
He was an uncompromising and enthusiastic champion of temperance. About the year 1830 Rev. Anderson, D. D., commenced advocating the cause of temperance, and Mr. Dinsmore was among the first to practice it. About that time, being in want of a barn (in those days they were all built of logs), he told some of his neighbors that he was going to have a "barn raising," and that no whisky was to be used in the work. In reply to this it was intimated to him that the men would not raise the barn without whisky. "I will try it anyhow," was Mr. Dinsmore's laconic reply, and he did so; he not only tried it, but succeeded; and it is a historical fact that this was the first barn in the country raised without the use of alcoholic liquors. To this record his son, William W., added the following: "And I, James Dinsmore's son, am three-score and ten years old, and have yet to take my first dram. I have not chewed an ounce of tobacco, or smoked the bulk of one cigar yet, and I do not feel like breaking my record now."
He died from the effects of being thrown from a young horse.

He was probably born in either Scotland or Ireland. A sheepskin deed in the possession of his grandson, William McC. Dinsmore, showed that he purchased land in what was called Caanan, in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, twelve miles from Pittsburgh, November 21, 1786. He lived on that farm for several years and then sold it and moved near Buffalo village in Mt. Pleasant Township, Washington County. James Dinsmore met with an accidental death, being thrown from a horse. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Buffalo and Mt. Lebanon, and so strict was he in the observance of his religious duties that on many occasions he walked the entire distance of eight miles in order to attend the services at the Mt. Lebanon Church. He left an estate of 130 acres to his widow, who survived to the unusual age of ninety-three years. [TCHWWC, 1071] The source makes the above statements about this person, but some of the information might pertain to his father instead.

General Notes: Wife - Hester Hamilton

After the death of her husband, although in delicate health, she cared for and educated her children, sending her sons James and Alexander to college to prepare for the ministry.
