He was educated in private and public schools of Pittsburg and Pennsylvania. Early in life he was employed in his father's wholesale grocery store, Second avenue, Pittsburg, John S. Dilworth & Company, commission and oil interests. During the big strike at Homestead Steel Works he was employed there, holding a trusted position until he was compelled by sickness, being poisoned, to relinquish his position with the Carnegie Steel Company. He was chief clerk in the department of public works of the city of Pittsburg for a number of years, also superintendent of the board of the city of Pittsburg. He was active in politics, and for a number of years was the president of the Nineteenth Ward Republican Association
