He received an excellent education, attending the common schools until he had attained his majority, and completing his literary course in a select school in Spring Mills. For twelve years he then followed the profession of teaching through the winter months, while the summer season he passed in farming. For some years later he filled the position of express and ticket agent for the Pennsylvania Central railroad at Hublersburg, Pennsylvania.
He was a stalwart Democrat in politics, and in religious faith was a consistent member of the Reformed Church.
