He was reared on a farm and worked a little in his father's wool factory. He remained with his parents and cared for them until they both passed away.
In 1869, he moved to his own place, and owned 241 acres of good land and forty-four acres of mountain land.
He served for a number of years as director of the poor. Politically he was a Democrat. He and his wife were members of the German Baptist Church.

He had five children with his first wife; two were still living in 1886.
