He attended Washington and Jefferson College one year, Pennsylvania State Agricultural College and Allegheny College, after which he engaged in farming, and entered the law office of his uncle, Judge J. W. F. White and J. F. Slagle January 1871. He was converted August 13, 1871, and began at once to prepare for the ministry, entering the Pittsburgh Conference M. E. church March 1872.
