General Notes: Husband - James Dickson

He came to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with his parents in July, 1822, and when he was ten years of age he came to Neville Island, where he thereafter resided, and became the heaviest shipper of garden produce on the island.

His family were members of the Presbyterian Church, of which he was one of the principal leaders and supporters. He was a member of the F. & A. M., of which he stated he had attained the 42d degree, and all the degrees in I. O. O. F. He was a stanch republican, and for nine years was supervisor, six years school director; was treasurer and collector of the school board for at least twenty-six years. He was a supporter of William Henry Harrison. He was successful in business and had a farm of thirty-two acres with two houses.

As of 1889: he had twenty-five grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and a death had never yet occurred among his children or grandchildren.

He began to work at gardening on Neville Island at an early age, and afterwards went into business for himself. The firm of James Dickson & Sons, gardeners, did the most extensive business of the kind in Allegheny County, making large shipments to New York, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. They grew the finest asparagus in the market, and had the honor of supplying the asparagus for Prince Henry's banquet in Chicago in 1902. Their other principal products were rhubarb, lettuce and cucumbers.
He held all the offices in his township. He began as an ardent whig, a supporter of Henry Clay and William H. Harrison, and after the death of the whig party was a loyal republican. He was a Presbyterian in religious belief, and, with his wife, was a charter member of the Neville Island Presbyterian church. He was a prominent and enthusiastic member of the Masonic fraternity, in which he attained the thirty-second degree, and was a Knight Templar and Shriner. [MAC I, 199]

General Notes: Wife - Mary Hamilton

Her grandparents were of Irish descent, and on coming to Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, opened a farm where East Liberty now is.
