He received a common school education and learned the carpenter's trade, which he followed until 1870, and then located on the old homestead farm, where he thereafter was engaged in cultivating and improving the property, which contained 100 acres. In 1862 he enlisted in Company E, One Hundredth Pennsylvania Vol­unteers, and served until the close of the war, participating in the battles of South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Petersburg, etc., and witnessed the surrender of Lee at Appomattox. In politics, he was a stanch Democrat.
