He was educated in the common schools of his neighborhood, and reared to agricultural pursuits. On the death of his father he took charge of the homestead, and cared for his widowed mother until her death in 1885.
He was a Democrat, and held the office of school director for some years, also was judge of elections for a time. His wife was a member of the Methodist Church.
