General Notes: Husband - John Miller Deeds

World War I: he joined the United States Army by enlistment immediately after war was declared and was with Company M, Tenth Regiment. In May, 1918, he was at Camp Hancock, having been promoted to the rank of sergeant.

After completing his high school studies in Ligonier, Pennsylvania, he attended the Indiana State Normal School. Soon thereafter the United States entered the first World War and he enlisted in the infantry of the United States Army on April 15, 1917. He became a member of Company M, 110th Infantry of the 28th Division, was sent overseas with this unit and saw action in a number of major engagements, including Chateau Thierry, the Aisne, St. Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne. On August second or third he was wounded by shrapnel and gassed during the battle of the Marne and later was awarded the Victory Medal and the Order of the Purple Heart for gallantry under fire. He served with the Army of Occupation and in October, 1919, was honorably discharged.
Returning to Ligonier he engaged in farming and general stock raising for the next ten years. It was during this period that he became interested in breeding pure bred Shropshire sheep, which he showed throughout the country, winning wide recognition for the excellence of his entries. Beginning in 1935 he engaged in the profession of landscape gardening and enjoyed unusual success in this occupation.
Perpetuating family tradition, Mr. Deeds generously contributed to the general welfare and was called upon to occupy several highly important positions of public trust. In this connection he was county chairman of the unemployment commission in 1933, and the following year was State chairman. Through his military service he was very active in the Byers-Tosh Post of the American Legion, which he at one time he headed as commander. He was also a former commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In politics he was a Republican and in his religious convictions worshiped at the Methodist Episcopal Church.
