He was a farmer in West Fairchild township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, having a farm of one hundred acres there on which he had lived since his childhood. His education was the general one of a country lad, attending school in winter, and but little else except farm work during the remainder of the years. He was a Democrat in political matters, and his religious faith was with the Methodist Episcopal church, of which he was a regular attendant.
