General Notes: Husband - Kit Carson Dean

He attended the public schools of New Lebanon, PA, until he was eighteen years of age, and then entered the McElwain Institute of that place, in which he remained a student for two years. Returning home, he continued farming until he had reached his twenty-second year, when he went to western Kansas and preempted a homestead, later establishing a grocery business, which he conducted for five years. Having disposed of his store he formed a partnership with his brother in the founding and conduct of a general mercantile business at New Lebanon, Pennsylvania. They successfully conducted this enterprise for some five years, when Mr. Dean sold his interest and accepted a position as traveling salesman for a grocery house. Later he spent about a year in the oil fields, and in 1897 located at Sheakleyville as manager for the large general store of H. E. Ross, finally purchasing the business. His high standing as a merchant and his practical public spirit as a citizen, with his stanchness as a Republican, earned him a substantial position as a man of public affairs. Mr. Dean served two terms as mayor of Sheakleyville, and he was for two terms a member of the auditing committee. He was elected justice of the peace, but never took out his official papers. Fraternally he belonged to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Sheakleyville Lodge No. 592. [HMC 1909, 1028]
