He was a nephew of Timothy Alden, once president of Allegheny College at Meadville, PA.

One must wonder if there has been confusion in the sources: (1) W. Alden is given as the husband of Eliza Beatty, daughter of Robert and Anna (McMillan) Beatty, and (2) Wells N. Alden is given as the husband of Elizabeth Beatty, daughter of Robert and Mary (Roberts) Beatty.
