General Notes: Husband - Gen. John Patton

He was born in Sligo, Ireland, emigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the year 1761, and entered the Revolutionary war as major of the 2d battalion, of Colonel Miles' Pennsylvania Rifle Regiment, March 13, 1776. He became major of the 9th Regt., Pa. Line, October 25, 1776, and colonel of one of the sixteen additional Continental Regiments, January 11, 1777. He resigned February 3, 1778. After the war he removed to Centre (then Mifflin) County, and built Centre Furnace. He was appointed major-general of the Pennsylvania Militia, April 18, 1800.

He was born in Sligo, Ireland, in 1745, came to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1765, and for a time was one of four auctioneers of that city, the office then being filled by government appointment. After his marriage he engaged in mercantile business, and we find his name mentioned as a contributor to the amount of two thousand pounds toward the support of the Colonial forces. He was, of course, a Whig, and, with Robert Morris, was noted for liberality when practical aid was needed. During the Revolution he did gallant service as colonel of the Sixteenth Additional Continental Regiment of Pennsylvania Infantry. In 1789 he removed to Centre County, and in 1791 he built Centre furnace, in partnership with Col. Miles, the founder of Milesburg. At the time of his death, Gen. Patton held the rank of major general of this division of the Pennsylvania militia.
He was one of the original members of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, of Philadelphia, which was afterward merged into the Hibernian Society, an organization which rendered great and important public service at that critical period. This society was non-political and non-sectarian.

He engaged actively in the struggle for national independence, as colonel of the Sixteenth Regiment of Pennsylvania troops. For a time he had charge of the defenses of Philadelphia; moreover, he was one of that noble band of merchants of that city, composed of Robert Morris and other patriotic men, who raised, on their own personal responsibility, some two hundred and sixty thousand pounds to relieve Washington in the greatest crisis of the Revolution. He also was a member of the famous Cincinnati Society.
