General Notes: Husband - A. P. Zerby

His first literary training was under the instruction of John Strayhorn, and his entire education was obtained in the district schools. He strongly endorsed the changes that were later made in educational institutions, and served as a member of the school board in his district. At the age of eighteen he left the schoolroom, and worked for some time in a mill and in the lumber woods, being thus employed until twenty-seven years of age.
After his marriage Mr. Zerby began housekeeping on the old home farm, which was comprised of sixty-five acres of rich and arable land. After the death of his father he bought it at a public sale, although he went in debt for much of the amount. In connection with his farming operations, he also operated a sawmill, which he equipped with modern machinery.
He always supported the men and measures of the Democratic party, and was called on to serve in several official positions, including those of auditor, overseer of the poor, judge of election, school director and assessor. Mr. and Mrs. Zerby held membership with the United Evangelical Church.
