This family is of Scotch-Irish origin, and settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on arrival in America in 1725.

He was born in Lancaster County and removed in 1784 to Rostraver township, Westmoreland County, where he had purchased a considerable tract of land.
He served in the navy in the Revolutionary war.
He had a distillery on his farm, where the populace often met in the "Whiskey Insurrection of 1784" to discuss their grievances.
