General Notes: Husband - David Morton Marshall

He spent his boyhood days on the farm and attended the public schools of that district. During the school year, 1885-1886, he attended Grove City College, after which he returned to the farm. After his marriage he farmed the place of his father-in-law, James W. Cunningham, while the latter was discharging his duties as county treasurer. He then engaged in the hardware business at Wampum, under the firm name of the Wampum Hardware Company, having George E. Harrison as partner for three years, and Edward Ketler for five years. They then sold out to Francis Davis. After being out of business one week to the hour, Mr. Marshall, in February, 1905, purchased the furniture and undertaking business of Buchanan & Uber. He received a diploma as an embalmer from the Pittsburg School of Anatomy, May 19, 1905, and in September of the same year was granted a State license to practice that profession. He had the patronage of his part of the county almost exclusively. His store was first located in the I. O. O. F. Building, but beginning in February, 1907, he occupied a commodious three-story building. He was a stockholder in the First National Bank of Wampum, and ranked among the foremost business men of the community.
Fraternally, Mr. Marshall was an active member of Wampum Lodge, No. 865, I. O. O. F.; and Modern Woodmen of America, at Wampum, and also a Master Mason beginning September 3, 1908. Religiously, he was a member of the Presbyterian Church, of which he was treasurer from its founding, and an elder from 1904. A Republican in politics, he was a member of the borough council from 1899. [TCHNCLC, 594]

He was educated in the public schools, Grove City College, and a Pittsburgh special school for the work in which he was engaged. Born and reared on a farm, he remained there until he came to Wampum as part owner of the Wampum Hardware Company. He remained in this business until 1905, when he bought out the undertaking enterprise of Buchanan & Uber, which he then continued under his own name. Mr. Marshall, in politics, was a Republican. He served on the Town Council for sixteen years, and was largely instrumental in securing many of the modern conveniences in Wampum, among them light and water service. He was also adviser of the borough in the purchase of real estate, several purchases having been made at his suggestion. Mr. Marshall was a member of Meridian Lodge, No. 411, Free and Accepted Masons; the New Castle Lodge of Perfection, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite; of Wampum Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of which he was Past Grand; the Modern Woodmen of America; also he was a member of the Pennsylvania State Association of Funeral Directors, as well as of the Western Pennsylvania Association. He was a member of and an elder in the Presbyterian Church of Wampum. For about seventeen years he was a member of the Lawrence County Sabbath School Association, a delegate to the County convention nearly every year during that time, and served a term as president of the association. During nearly all that time he held some office in the county organization. [PAH, 404]
