He was born in Ireland and came to America when eight years old.
He and his wife were members of the old Seceder Church.

It was in 1810 that and his wife left their native soil in Ireland and crossed the ocean in search of a new home in the western wilderness. They located first in Butler County, Pennsylvania, but later removed to Allegheny County, and bought the 200 acres of land which eventually was in the possession of his grandsons.
