The Cunninghams are a Scotch family, although many of the numerous immigrants of this surname who came to America previous to the beginning of the eighteenth century were descended from ancestors who had lived in Ireland perhaps for many generations. But from whatever country the immigrant Cunninghams may have sailed from, the fact remains that very nearly all of them came of the ancient Cunningham Clan, which was seated in Ayrshire, Scotland, as early as A. D. 1200.
