During the war of the Rebellion, he was lieutenant of a company in the Ninth Pennsylvania Cavalry. He was placed on the staff of Gen. Thomas J. Jordan, who commanded a cavalry brigade in General Sherman's army. He served throughout the war, and was mustered out with the rank of captain.
