He received a common school education in Washington township, Erie County, Pennsylvania, and, in 1870, started at farming. He purchased a farm, containing 70 acres, cleared it up, and brought it into a good state of cultivation, with substantial buildings. It was located one and a half miles from McLallen's Corners.
