General Notes: Husband - John Stauffer McIlvaine


He was educated at the Academy at New London, Chester County, Pennsylvania, and was then engaged as clerk in a store and warehouse at Gap. He afterward served his apprenticeship in the machine shops at Parkesburg, and then worked at his trade for several years, including one year at Peoria, Illinois. When he returned to Gap, he engaged in the general merchandising business, in partnership with his brother Robert. After three years he retired and worked for a year at his trade. He then became a clerk in the Philadelphia National Bank, at 4th and Chestnut streets, where he remained eleven years, nine of them as general bookkeeper. He came to Chambersburg in 1875, as assistant cashier of the National Bank of Chambersburg, and at the death of the previous cashier, in 1881, he became cashier. He was been a member of the Presbyterian Church beginning from the age of twenty-one, and was a ruling elder of the Falling Spring Presbyterian Church beginning in 1883. He also served as superintendent of the Sunday School, in which he was a teacher for many years. He was also a member of the F. & A. M., and of the Royal Arcanum. He was an active member of the Kittochtinny Historical Society, and contributed a valuable paper on the "Banks of Chambersburg" to the archives of the Society. In politics he was a Republican.
