General Notes: Husband - Elihu Dinwiddie Reid

His education was acquired in the common schools, and when quite young he entered a store as clerk, but embarked in the dry goods business for himself at Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, early in life. About 1830 he came to Chambersburg, Franklin County, and formed the dry goods firm of McCly & Reid, which partnership existed two years; then Mr. Reid conducted the business alone until about 1868, and had a successful and extensive trade. He then went to California and resided in Sacramento for three years. During the war of the Rebellion he enlisted, in 1861, and was elected captain of the commissary department of the Twelfth Regiment Pennsylvania Reserves. He served three years and participated in the battles in which his regiment took part. Returning to civil life he engaged in the grocery trade, in which he continued up to within a few years of his death. [HFC 1887, 679]

He served in the war of the Rebellion as lieutenant of Company K, 13th Pennsylvania Reserves, and afterward as quartermaster and commissary of the Brigade, serving in all three years, and participating in the battles of Drainesville, Fredericksburg, Antietam and Gettysburg. Early in life he engaged in the dry goods business at Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, but came to Chambersburg in 1830, and formed the dry goods firm of Maclay & Reid. The partnership lasted only two years, after which he conducted the business alone for many years. Later he went to California, and lived at Sacramento for three years.

He and his wife were the parents of six children; only two were still living in 1887.
