General Notes: Husband - Alexander "Devil Alex" Culbertson

South Mountain, Franklin Co, PA - a distiller

Alexander Culbertson ("Devil Alex," "Old Nick") was a giant, some say seven feet in height, others seven feet six inches. Daniel Foust, who knew him, says: "He was a powerful, red-haired man and followed the business of making whiskey. Had a distillery at the foot of South Mountain, Franklin Co. Everybody was afraid of him, and he had the reputation of throwing a live cat in a kettle of boiling apple butter." Another gentleman who knew him says of him: "He was as though of iron, and I am told he would rise from his bed any time of the night and go twenty miles to have the pleasure of a fistic encounter. Had he taken care of himself, his constitution would have carried him to a great age. I think he was near one hundred years old at his death."
