General Notes: Husband - John Culbert Rankin

From 1883 to 1886 was a member of the household of his aunt, Eliza Graham, in Elizabeth township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. In the autumn of the latter year he went to Johnson County, Missouri, remaining one year, and then returning to the home of his aunt and residing there until January, 1889. He then returned to the home farm, and in 1893 was given charge of the estate. Eventually he and his sister, Eliza A., inherited the homestead, and in 1895 Mr. Rankin was elected treasurer, storekeeper and bookkeeper of the Equitable Coal Company at Webster, Pennsylvania. When he was one of a board of five managers, on September 1, 1900, the company sold out to the Pittsburgh Coal Company, realizing $180.23 for each $50.00 invested, and meanwhile he had lived on and managed the farm with most satisfactory results.
It was in 1889 that Mr. Rankin first became active in politics. In that year he was made township school treasurer and assessor, serving nine years in the former office and four in the latter. In 1900 he was elected township auditor for a term of three years, and then for four years was appointed treasurer for township road supervisors, and beginning in March, 1910, was secretary for township road supervisors. Mr. Rankin was always an active Republican, but always commanded the respect of the opposite party. He was elected justice of the peace by those of his own political principles in 1904, but was reelected twice without opposition by the Democrats. He was once the candidate of his party for nomination for county commissioner. The only fraternal organizations with which Mr. Rankin was affiliated were the Royal Arcanum and the Grand Fraternity of Philadelphia. He was a member of Rehoboth Presbyterian Church, serving on the official board as auditor.
