He was reared on the home farm in Shenango Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, and received his educational training in the public schools. He helped farm the place until 1891, when he went west to Knox County, Illinois, where he spent two years. He then returned to Lawrence County and engaged in farming, and worked in the mill which was later conducted by his brothers, for a period of five years. On April 1, 1898, he returned to the old homestead, where he then followed farming with uninterrupted success.
