BHCWC 1890, 287 states that he was born on the farm near Grapeville, Westmoreland County, PA, in 1865. BHCWC 1890, 282 states that his father did not purchase this farm until 1780.
He was a stanch democrat, a leading member of the German Reformed church at Brush Creek, Westmoreland County, PA, having served as elder and deacon. To he and his wife were born twelve children, ten girls and two boys, all of whom were dead before 1890 except Lucy.
