He was a merchant. In the Civil War he served as aid to Pierpont, subsequently Governor of Virginia with the rank of colonel. He was a member of the first Legislature of West Virginia.

She was a descendant of Warren Du Val, a noted Hugenot, who settled in Anne Armichel [Anne Arundel?] County, Maryland, in 1659.
