He received a limited education in the pioneer sub­scription schools, learned the blacksmith's trade, and followed that occupation for twenty years. He inherited a farm in Cranberry township, Butler County, PA, upon which he resided until his death. He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian church.

She was a daughter of English parents, and was born in that country, but accompanied her parents as a child, when they emigrated from there to the United States, and settled in Butler County, Pennsylvania.
