He was reared a farmer. He came to Venango County, Pennsylvania, and was a grocer in Oil City in 1862, where he became acquainted with and married his wife. He removed to Cran-berry, in June, 1872, and began operating in oil, having three wells. He was also engaged as a grocer, butcher, dealer in coal and mineral water. [HVC 1879, 592]
