He was born in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. He went with his parents, when eight years of age, to Westmoreland County. He was a tanner in his younger days, but turned his attention to farming in his after years.

She was an invalid for ten years prior to her death, two years of which time she was confined to her bed and entirely helpless, neither able to raise hand or foot. Her disease was nervous prostration.
