He settled on a farm in Mercer County, PA, where his wife died about 1909; he later lived retired at Mercer.

After leaving the public schools, he continued his studies at the State Normal School in Edinboro, Erie County, PA, and at the age of seventeen years began life for himself as a teacher, and for two terms taught school. He was subsequently employed as a clerk in both Cooperstown and Franklin, working in both places in a general store. Going to New York City in 1868, he was for three years similarly employed in a wholesale hat and fur store. Returning then to Cooperstown, he established himself in business as a general merchant, remaining there six years. Coming then to Springfield Township, Mr. Crawford settled on the farm and embarked in general farming and stock-raising. His farm contained one hundred and ninety-two acres of rich and fertile land, a large part of which was in a good state of tillage. He erected a substantial set of farm buildings, and was well supplied with the machinery, appurtenances and appliances required for successfully carrying on his work, his improvements ranking with the best in the county.
